Act Now To Save Them
The Canadian Tamil Congress is currently running
a postcard campaign to help raise awareness about
the plight of the 253 Tamil refugees who have
been languishing aboard a boat for several months
at Merak, Indonesia. The migrants are suffering
from ill-health, and are without proper access
to medical professionals, supplies and basic amenities.
More than 30 of those on board are children. The
poor conditions on board have resulted recently
in the death of Charles Jacob, a young man who
had been refused treatment by the Indonesian authorities.
As many Canadian families have relatives on board
the boat, the Canadian Tamil Congress is involved
in the process to ensure these migrants are not
sent back to Sri Lanka where they will be tortured
or jailed upon their return.
Currently, more than 100 of those on board have
been deemed genuine refugees by the UNHCR. Sri
Lanka has a well-documented record of persecuting
Tamils. In the last year, Sri Lanka committed
crimes against humanity against the Tamil population
and oversaw large-scale massacres. Please join
us in ensuring these migrants find a safe home
and are not returned to their certain persecution
in Sri Lanka.
