Canadian Tamil Congress pledges to plant hundreds of trees in the future Rouge National Park

For Immediate Release

May 2nd, 2012

Canadian Tamil Congress pledges to plant hundreds of trees in the future Rouge National Park

Multi generational Tamil Canadians, their friends and neighbours, with shovels and buckets in hand will come together in an initiative to help reforest and preserve Canadian natural heritage in their very own backyard. Supported by the David Suzuki Foundation and RONA’s Urban Reforestation program, the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) volunteers will be planting trees in the Bob Hunter Memorial Park section of the future Rouge National Park.

Coming from a culture and heritage of extensive environmental protection and conservation, the CTC and its members see their commitment to the future Rouge National Park for generations to come as a natural progression of the Tamil community’s inherent philosophy of giving back. Actively involved in fundraising, supporting and advocating on behalf of a myriad of community initiatives, the Tamil Community, through the Canadian Tamil Congress, believes that the creation of the future Rouge National Park is a much needed and deeply valued investment in the environment.

This May, in remembrance of those loved ones who were lost to the Tsunami and as a result of war, Tamil Canadians will be planting trees in their memory. The planting of trees has long been considered a traditional means of preserving and restoring the environment; recognizing that trees are vital to the very existence and wellbeing of our society as a whole. Furthermore for the Tamil community, the tree is a deeply symbolic and much treasured living emblem of continuance and as such has been planted and revered by individuals in tribute and in recognition of the interdependence of all living creatures.
