Update on CTC’s COVID-19 Food Relief Effort in the Kilinochchi District of Sri Lanka

On Saturday May 2nd, a total 100 families from Puliyanpokkanai -Kaanan village (42) and Tharmapuram West (7) GN divisions of Kandawalai DS division, Puthumurippu (10) and Uthayanagar (3) GN division of Karachchi DS division and Pallikuda (30) GN division Poonakary DS division of Kilinochchi District received the food relief packages from Tamil Canadians.

Furthermore, upon request of the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) – Karachchi, 8 quarantine families from Ananthapuram, Malayalapuram, Kirishnapuram and Vivakanandanagar received the food relief packages.

Guideline of prevention of pandemic of COVID -19 and its implication, famers are unable to sell their harvest to wider market at least in reasonable price. In order to motivate the farmers, higher price was given to the farmers with consideration cost of production of their products and distributed the vegetables together with food relief pack.

This effort is being implemented by the Institute of Regional Development and Governance (IRDG) and facilitated by the North and East Economic Development (NEED) Centre.
