
CTC Commemorates 16 Years of Mullivaikal Remembrance
May 18, 2025 -16 Years of Grief, Resistance, and Unyielding Hope for Justice
On May 18, 2025, the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) solemnly commemorated the 16th anniversary of the Tamil Genocide, marking a powerful day of remembrance and reflection for the thousands of lives lost in the final days of Sri Lanka’s civil war.
The event began with a moment of silence, honouring the victims and survivors of the genocide. The Eekai Sudar (Flame of Sacrifice) was lit by Kasthuri Selvarajah, a survivor who lived through the final days of the war, symbolizing the enduring spirit and resilience of the Tamil people.
Following the flame lighting, attendees participated in “Malar Vaṇakkam” the Floral Tribute paying respects through silent prayer and reflection.
In his address, CTC President Kumar Ratnam emphasized: “Without justice, there can be no meaningful reconciliation. We call upon the Government of Canada and the international community to take decisive steps toward accountability. Genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity must not be ignored. Justice must not be delayed, and it must not be denied.”
The remembrance was further deepened by powerful testimonies from war survivors, sharing harrowing truths that must be heard, preserved, and passed on. These moments served as a collective reminder of our responsibility to ensure history is neither forgotten nor distorted.
Community activist Pon Balarajan addressed the crowd, stressing the importance of intergenerational memory and the need to educate future generations about our history and struggle.
Azmin Aiyoob, representing the beloved Muslim community, stood in solidarity with the Tamil community, reminding all present that unity among Tamil speaking people in the face of injustice is essential.
A short documentary video on Mullivaikal was screened, presenting visual evidence of the genocide and a concise portrayal of the Tamil people’s tragic but courageous history.
MP-elect Juanita Nathan stood in solidarity with the Tamil community and read out the official Tamil Genocide Memorial Day message from the Prime Minister of Canada. Her presence underscored the growing recognition of May 18 as a day of profound importance for Tamil Canadians and the urgent need for justice and accountability.
