Woven Voices: Celebrating Tamil Heritage and Women’s Resilience
On Thursday, October 16, 2025, the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC), in partnership with the Sam Ibrahim Centre for Inclusive Excellence in Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Leadership and Toronto Metropolitan University’s Fashion Zone, proudly hosted Woven Voices: Threads of Tradition, Pathways to Global Markets an inspiring evening that brought together tradition, innovation, and community.
The event celebrated the artistry and strength of women whose weaving traditions and stories continue to shape communities at home and abroad. At its heart was Mullai, a community-driven initiative led by the Canadian Tamil Congress to preserve and promote traditional Tamil handloom weaving and craft practices from Sri Lanka’s North and East. By showcasing these crafts on a global platform, Mullai aims to create sustainable livelihoods for women affected by war while connecting their work with modern fashion and global markets.
The fashion showcase featured nine unique looks crafted from Mullai’s handloom fabrics, blending age-old techniques like natural dyeing with contemporary design elements. The result was a vibrant display of cultural heritage meeting modern creativity capturing the attention of designers, entrepreneurs, and fashion enthusiasts alike.
Throughout the evening, guests had the opportunity to:

The program began with a warm welcome from Komal Tariq, followed by a land acknowledgment and remarks by Dr. Sicchia, Associate Professor and Associate Dean at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Prabaarja Bedi, Founder of Unfabricated, emceed the evening, setting an engaging tone. Raveena Rajasingham, Mullai Project Coordinator at CTC, shared the story and objectives behind Mullai. Brian Richards, Fashion Manager and Studio Co-Director at TMU, spoke about the significance of the collaboration and the role of fashion in bridging cultures.
The fashion segment, coordinated by Inthu Mathan with the participation of several models, highlighted inclusive approaches to fashion showcasing diversity in ethnicity, style, and body type.
Danton Thurairajah, Executive Director of the Canadian Tamil Congress, spoke about Mullai’s origins and how this initiative is rooted in empowering women from war-affected communities in Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka.
The evening concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Kavitha Ponnampalam of the Mullai team and closing remarks by Jennifer, Assistant Director of Innovation & Entrepreneurship. This first-of-its-kind event not only spotlighted Tamil heritage on a Canadian stage but also opened meaningful pathways for collaboration between traditional artisans and contemporary fashion leaders.

இந்த நிகழ்வு பாரம்பரியம், புதுமை மற்றும் சமூக இணைப்பை ஒரே மேடையில் கொண்டுவந்து, பெண்களின் கலைநயம், படைப்பாற்றல் மற்றும் உறுதியை கொண்டாடியது.
நிகழ்வின் முக்கிய நோக்கம் முல்லை திட்டத்தை அறிமுகப்படுத்துவதாகும். முல்லை என்பது வடக்கு மற்றும் கிழக்கு இலங்கையில் போரினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்களை வலுப்படுத்தும் நோக்கில் கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவையால் தொடங்கப்பட்ட சமூக அடிப்படையிலான முயற்சி ஆகும். பாரம்பரிய கைத்தறி நெய்தல் மற்றும் கைவினை திறன்களை பாதுகாத்து, அவற்றை நவீன இரசனைகளுடன் இணைப்பதே இந்த திட்டத்தின் குறிக்கோள் ஆகும்.
இந்த நிகழ்வில் இடம்பெற்ற ஃபேஷன் காட்சியில் முல்லை ஆடைகளை பயன்படுத்தி உருவாக்கப்பட்ட ஒன்பது தனித்துவமான ஆடை வடிவங்கள் காட்சிப்படுத்தப்பட்டன. பாரம்பரிய நெய்தல் நுட்பங்களை நவீன வடிவமைப்புகளுடன் இணைத்து உருவாக்கப்பட்ட இந்த காட்சிப்படுத்தல் பாரம்பரியமும் புதுமையும் சந்திக்கும் ஒரு அழகான தருணமாக அமைந்திருந்ததோடு இது வடிவமைப்பாளர்கள், தொழில் முனைவோர் மற்றும் ஃபேஷன் ஆர்வலர்களின் பெரும் கவனத்தை ஈர்த்திருந்தது.
நிகழ்வில் பங்கேற்றவர்கள் புதிய வடிவமைப்புகளுக்கான ஊக்கத்தை அளிக்கும் ஆடைகள் மற்றும் கைவினைப் பொருட்களை தெரிந்துகொள்ள முடிந்ததுடன் கைவினைஞர்கள், வடிவமைப்பாளர்கள் மற்றும் உலக சந்தை நிபுணர்களுடன் தொடர்பு ஏற்படுத்தல், பாரம்பரிய கைவினைகள் நவீன உலக சந்தைகளில் உருவாக்கும் புதிய வாய்ப்புகளை ஆராய்தல் போன்ற வாய்ப்புக்களையும் பெற்றிருந்தனர்.
இந்த நிகழ்வு பல்வேறு சமூகப் பின்னணிகளை பிரதிநிதித்துவப்படுத்தும் வகையில் நடத்தப்பட்டது. இது கனடாவில் இப்படிப்பட்ட முறையில் நடைபெறும் முதல் நிகழ்வாகும். தமிழ் பாரம்பரியத்தை உலக அரங்கில் அழகாக வெளிப்படுத்தி, பாரம்பரிய கைவினைஞர்களுக்கும் நவீன ஃபேஷன் உலகத்திற்கும் இடையே புதிய ஒத்துழைப்பு வாய்ப்புகளை உருவாக்கிய முக்கிய நிகழ்வாக இது அமைந்திருந்தது.
