On September 27, 2025, the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) hosted a meaningful learning journey ahead of Truth and Reconciliation Day.
The program began with a guided tour for approximately 50 Tamil Canadians of the Huronia Museum, including the Huron / Ouendat village and longhouse, showcasing life before European contact, followed by a ferry ride across Georgian Bay. The event was a success, fostering understanding and dialogue.
Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30 reminds us why it is vital to honour survivors, acknowledge injustices, and commit to building respectful relationships with Indigenous peoples.
CTC’s journey of engagement with Indigenous communities has spanned many years. In March 2018, CTC became the first diaspora organization to participate in a two-day cultural exchange with the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, with 130 members taking part. In the following years, CTC deepened these relationships joining with the Indigenous community at Six Nations of the Grand River in 2021, and in 2022 marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by hosting Bob Watts, the former Interim Executive Director of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, at the CTC office. In 2023, CTC partnered with Curve Lake First Nation, and in 2024 collaborated with the Chippewas of Georgina Island at Sutton District High School in Georgina, Ontario. This year’s visit to Huronia Museum and Georgian Bay continues that tradition of meaningful cultural exchange and shared learning.
These efforts build on earlier initiatives such as the 13th Annual Tamil Canadian Walk in 2021, when CTC raised funds in support of the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF), further reinforcing its commitment to reconciliation.
As Tamils, who deeply understand the pain of being deprived of land rights and enduring oppression, we recognize the importance of these collaborations as both an education and a shared path toward healing. CTC remains committed to fostering reconciliation and building lasting solidarity with Indigenous peoples.
