Canadian Tamil Congress Celebrates 19th Annual Thai Pongal & Tamil Heritage Month Gala Dinner

The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) proudly hosted its 19th Annual Thai Pongal and Tamil Heritage Month Gala Dinner on January 24, 2026, at the Hilton Markham Conference Centre. The evening brought together community members, leaders, and dignitaries for a meaningful celebration of Tamil culture, heritage, and collective progress.

The event began with a lively networking reception, where guests and dignitaries connected and exchanged ideas. The formal program opened with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp, symbolizing prosperity, unity, and new beginnings.

The gala welcomed high level dignitaries from all three levels of government, who joined the community in celebrating Thai Pongal and Tamil Heritage Month. Hon. Bill Blair, MP and former Chief of Police of the City of Toronto, delivered greetings on behalf of the Government of Canada. Member of Parliament Juanita Nathan also addressed the audience and reflected on her recent visit to India and Sri Lanka. She highlighted the severe challenges faced by Upcountry Tamil communities following recent floods in Sri Lanka and emphasized the important role the Tamil diaspora plays in supporting relief and long term recovery efforts.

CTC proudly recognized outstanding leadership and service during the evening.
His Worship Frank Scarpitti, Mayor of Markham, received the Leaders for Change Award in recognition of his continued support for the Tamil community.
MP Garnett Genuis received the Service Excellence Award for his longstanding commitment and advocacy for Human Rights.

The event featured distinguished speakers who inspired reflection and action. The Special Guest, Hon. Rauff Hakeem, Member of Parliament from Sri Lanka, addressed the gathering and shared insights on the importance of global Tamil unity. The Keynote Speaker, Roy Ratnavel, author of Prisoner #1056, delivered a powerful and thought provoking message on the future of Tamil youth and the responsibility of the community to guide, empower, and uplift the next generation.
Thushyanthan R. Thurairatnam, CTC Humanitarian Coordinator for Sri Lanka, spoke about the Canadian Tamil Congress’s humanitarian and development initiatives in Sri Lanka and their impact on war affected communities.

The evening also celebrated Tamil arts and culture through vibrant performances. Students of Smt. Nirothini Pararajasingam from Niro Dance Creations presented the welcome dance. Students of Guru Niranjana Chandru from Kalaimanram Academy of Fine Arts and Yoga delivered a graceful Bharatanatyam performance. Students from the Centre for Leadership and Innovation also showcased their talents highlighting the importance of skills development in Sri Lanka..

A highlight of the night was the Mullai Fashion Show, which showcased exquisite handloom sarees created by war affected women through the Mullai Handloom Initiative in Puthukkudiyiruppu, Sri Lanka. The presentation powerfully reflected resilience, empowerment, and cultural pride.

In his address, CTC President Kumar Ratnam emphasized that Thai Pongal and Tamil Heritage Month goes beyond celebrating the past. He spoke about shaping a future where Tamil identity stands confident, passionate, and contributive. He reaffirmed CTC’s commitment, stating that the organization will serve with humility, lead with integrity, and grow together as a community. CTC also announced that the 2026 Tamil Canadian Walk will be dedicated to supporting the Tamil Community Centre. As part of this announcement, a ceremonial cheque was presented reflecting the Gala’s title sponsor, Sutharshan Paramasamy family’s generous pledge of $500,000 toward the Tamil Community Centre.

மத்திய, மாகாண மற்றும் நகராட்சி அரசுகளின் பிரதிநிதிகள் விழாவில் கலந்து கொண்டு தைப்பொங்கல் மற்றும் தமிழ் மரபுத் திங்களை தமிழ்சமூகத்துடன் இணைந்து கொண்டாடினர். கனடா அரசின் சார்பில் பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் மற்றும் டொராண்டோ நகரின் முன்னாள் காவல் தலைவர் மாண்புமிகு பில் பிளேர் அவர்கள் வாழ்த்துரை வழங்கினார்.
பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் ஜுவானிட்டா நாதன் அவர்கள் உரையாற்றிய போது, இந்தியா மற்றும் இலங்கைக்கு மேற்கொண்ட தனது சமீபத்திய பயணங்களை நினைவுகூர்ந்தார். அண்மைய வெள்ளப்பெருக்குகளால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட இலங்கையின் மலையகத் தமிழ் சமூகங்கள் எதிர்கொண்டு வரும் சவால்களை அவர் எடுத்துரைத்தார். நிவாரணம் மற்றும் நீண்டகால மீளமைப்பு பணிகளில் தமிழ் புலம்பெயர் சமூகத்தின் பங்கு முக்கியமானது எனவும் அவர் வலியுறுத்தினார்.

விழாவில் உரையாற்றிய சிறப்பு விருந்தினர்கள் முக்கிய கருத்துகளை முன்வைத்தனர். இலங்கை பாராளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் கெளரவ ரஃப் ஹக்கீம் அவர்கள், உலகளாவிய தமிழர் ஒற்றுமையின் அவசியம் குறித்து உரையாற்றினார்.
முக்கிய உரையாளராக கலந்துகொண்ட Prisoner #1056 நூலின் ஆசிரியர் ராய் ரத்னவேல் அவர்கள் தமிழ் இளைஞர்களின் எதிர்காலம் மற்றும் அடுத்த தலைமுறையை வழிநடத்த வேண்டிய சமூகப் பொறுப்பு குறித்து சிந்தனையைத் தூண்டும் உரையை வழங்கினார்.
கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவையின் இலங்கைக்கான மனிதாபிமான ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர் துஷ்யந்தன் ஆர். துரைரத்னம் அவர்கள், இலங்கையில் போரால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட சமூகங்களுக்காக கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவை மேற்கொண்டு வரும் மனிதாபிமான மற்றும் அபிவிருத்தி பணிகள் குறித்து விளக்கினார்.

தமிழர் கலை மற்றும் பண்பாட்டை பிரதிபலிக்கும் பல்வேறு கலை நிகழ்ச்சிகளும் விழாவில் இடம்பெற்றன. நிரோ நடனக் கலைஞர்கள் அமைப்பைச் சேர்ந்த திருமதி நிரோதினி பரராஜசிங்கம் அவர்களின் மாணவிகள் வரவேற்பு நடனத்தை வழங்கினர். கலாமன்றம் நுண்கலை மற்றும் யோகா அகாடமியைச் சேர்ந்த குரு நிரஞ்சனா சந்த்ரு அவர்களின் மாணவிகள் பாரம்பரிய பாரதநாட்டிய நிகழ்ச்சியை அரங்கேற்றினர். Centre for Leadership and Innovation அமைப்பின் மாணவர்களும் தங்களின் திறமைகளை வெளிப்படுத்தினர்.

அதுமட்டும் அல்லாது நிகழ்வின் முக்கிய அம்சமாக முல்லை கைத்தெறி ஆடை அணிவகுப்பு நடைபெற்றது. இலங்கையின் புதுக்குடியிருப்பு பகுதியில் போரால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்களால் தயாரிக்கப்பட்ட முல்லை திட்டத்தின் மூலம் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட கைத்தறி ஆடைகள் இதில் காட்சிப்படுத்தப்பட்டன.

கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவையின் தலைவர் குமார் ரத்னம் அவர்கள் உரையாற்றும் போது, தைப்பொங்கலும் தமிழ் மரபுத் திங்களும் கடந்த காலத்தை நினைவுகூர்வதற்காக மட்டுமல்ல; எதிர்காலத்தை உருவாக்கும் பொறுப்பையும் நினைவூட்டும் காலமாகும் எனக் குறிப்பிட்டார். பணிவுடன் சேவை செய்து, நேர்மையுடன் வழிநடத்தி, சமூகமாக ஒன்றிணைந்து வளர்வதே பேரவையின் உறுதி என அவர் தெரிவித்தார். அதுமட்டுமல்லாது 2026 ஆம் ஆண்டில் நடைபெறவுள்ள கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவையின் தமிழ் கனடிய நடைபயணம் தமிழ் சமூக மையத்திற்கான ஆதரவாக நடத்தப்படும் எனவும் இதன்போது அறிவிக்கப்பட்டதுடன் விழாவின் தலைமை அனுசரணையாளர்களான சுதர்ஷன் பரமசாமி குடும்பத்தினர், தமிழ் சமூக மையத்திற்கு வழங்க முன்வந்த $500,000 நன்கொடை உறுதியும் நிகழ்வின் போது நினைவூட்டப்பட்டது.

இந்த விழா வெற்றிகரமாக நடைபெற உதவிய அனைத்து அரசியல் பிரதிநிதிகள், விருந்தினர்கள், அனுசரணையாளர்கள், தன்னார்வலர்கள் மற்றும் ஆதரவாளர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவை தனது மனமார்ந்த நன்றியைத் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறது.
