இலங்கையின் திருகோணமலை மாவட்டத்தில், குச்சவெளி பிரதேசச் செயலகப் பிரிவுக்குட்பட்ட ஓர் ஒதுக்கப்பட்ட உட்புறக் கிராமம் கள்ளம்பத்தை ஆகும். 1970-களில் காந்தியம் இயக்கத்தினால் முன்னெடுக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு திட்டத்தின் கீழ், வன்முறைகளால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மலையகத் தமிழ் குடும்பங்களை மீள்குடியேற்றுவதற்காக இக்கிராமம் உருவாக்கப்பட்டது.

ஒரு காலத்தில் 400-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட குடும்பங்கள் வாழ்ந்த இப்பகுதி, 1990-களின் நடுப்பகுதியில் நிலவிய உள்நாட்டுப் போரின் உச்சக்கட்டத்தினால் முழுமையாகக் கைவிடப்பட்டது. அங்கிருந்த மக்கள் இந்தியாவுக்கும் இலங்கையின் ஏனைய பகுதிகளுக்கும் இடம்பெயர்ந்தனர். 2004 சுனாமிப் பேரலை மற்றும் 2009-ல் போர் முடிவுக்கு வந்ததைத் தொடர்ந்து, கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளில் ஒரு சில குடும்பங்கள் மீண்டும் திரும்பித் தங்கள் வாழ்வாதாரத்தைக் கட்டியெழுப்பத் தொடங்கியுள்ளனர்.
மீள்குடியேற்ற முயற்சிகள் எடுக்கப்பட்ட போதிலும், சுத்தமான குடிநீர், கல்வி மற்றும் பொதுப் போக்குவரத்து போன்ற அடிப்படை வசதிகள் இன்றி கள்ளம்பத்தை கிராமம் இன்றும் பெரும் சவால்களை எதிர்கொண்டு வருகின்றது.

இக்கிராம மக்களின் துயரங்களை நேரில் கண்டறிந்து, அவர்களுக்குத் தேவையான உதவிகளை வழங்குவதற்கான சாத்தியக்கூறுகளை ஆராய்வதற்காகக் கடந்த மாதம் கனடியத் தமிழர் பேரவையின் (CTC) உறுப்பினர்கள் அங்கு விஜயம் மேற்கொண்டனர்.

அங்குள்ள ‘பேஸ்’ (FACE) அமைப்பினால் நிர்வகிக்கப்படும் முன்பள்ளிக்கு, மறைந்த திரு. எஸ். ஏ. டேவிட் அவர்களின் நினைவாகப் பெயர் சூட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. இப்பள்ளி ஆசிரியரின் வேண்டுகோளுக்கிணங்க, அங்கு தேவைப்பட்ட ஓர் இரும்பு அலமாரியை நன்கொடையாளர் ஒருவர் திரு. எஸ். ஏ. டேவிட் அவர்களின் நினைவாக அப்பள்ளிக்கு அன்பளிப்பாக வழங்கியுள்ளார்.

Kallampathai is an isolated interior village located in the Kucheveli Divisional Secretariat Division of the Trincomalee District in Sri Lanka. The village was established in the 1970s as part of a project by the Gandhiyam movement, which resettled upcountry Tamil families who were fleeing violence.

Once home to over 400 families, Kallampathai was completely abandoned during the height of the Sri Lankan civil war in the mid-1990s, when residents were displaced to India and other parts of Sri Lanka. In recent years, following the 2004 Tsunami and the end of the war in 2009, a small number of families have returned and begun rebuilding their lives in the village.

Despite resettlement efforts, Kallampathai continues to face significant challenges, including a lack of basic necessities such as access to clean drinking water, education, healthcare and public transportation.

Members of the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) visited the village last month to better understand the difficulties faced by residents and to explore ways to support the community.

The village preschool, named in memory of the late S. A. David, is operated by the FACE organization. In response to a request from the preschool teacher for a metal cabinet, a well-wisher generously donated one in honor of S. A. David.
