கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் ஏற்பாட்டில் தமிழ் அறிஞர் ஜி.யூ. போப் சிலை திறப்பு விழா

கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் ஏற்பாட்டில் ஜூலை 15, 2023 அன்று பிரின்ஸ் எட்வெர்ட் மாநிலத்தில் உள்ள பெடெக் நகரில் தமிழறிஞர் ஜி.யூ.போப் (G.U.Pope) அவர்களிற்கு நினைவுத்தூபி ஒன்று திறந்துவைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. 203 ஆண்டுகளிற்கு முன்னர் பெடெக் நகரில் பிறந்த கனடியாரான ஜி.யூ.போப் தன்னை ஒரு தமிழ் மாணவனாக மாற்றிக்கொண்டு பின்னாளில் திருக்குறள், நாலடியார், திருவாசகம் போன்ற தமிழ் நூல்களை ஆங்கிலத்தில் மொழிபெயர்த்தார். இவரின் இந்த மொழி பெயர்ப்பு மூலமாக தமிழர் இலக்கியம் உலக இலக்கியத்தின் கைகளில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டது.

எம்மொழிக்கு பண்பு செய்தவரை கெளரவிக்கும் முகமாகவும், கனடாவின் கிழக்கு கடற்கரை பகுதிகளிற்கு வருகை தரும் தமிழ் சுற்றுலாப்பயணிகள் கவனத்தை ஈர்க்கும் நோக்குடனும் இந்த நிகழ்வு ஒருங்கிணைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. ஜி.யூ. போப் பிறந்த ஊரான பெடெக் நகரில் அவரது வீடு இருந்த இடத்திலேயே இந்த நினைவுத்தூபி அமைக்கப்பட்டது மேலும் சிறப்பான அம்சமாகும்.

இந்த நிகழ்வில் போப் குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்கள் கலந்துகொண்டதோடு பெடெக் நகரின் வரலாற்று சமூக (Bedeque Area Historical Society) தலைவர் கலாநிதி டொக் சொபே (Dr. Doug Sobey), போர்டோன் கிங்கோரா மாநில சட்ட மன்ற உறுப்பினர் ஜேமி பொக்ஸ் (Jamie Fox), பிரின்ஸ் எட்வெர்ட் மாநிலத்தின் மாகாண சமூக அபிவிருத்தி அமைச்சர் பார்ப் ரம்சே (Hon. Barb Ramsay), பெடெக் நகரின் முன்னாள் மாநகராட்சி மன்றத்தலைவர் ரான் ரெய்னோர் (Ron Reynor), சார்லேட்டௌன் மாநகராட்சி மன்றத்தலைவர் பிலிப் பிரவுன் (Philip Brown), மற்றும் பிரின்ஸ் எட்வெர்ட் மாநிலத்திலும் அதன் அண்மைப் பிரதேசங்களில் இருந்தும் பலரும் கனடிய தமிழர் பேரவையின் உறுப்பினர்களுடன் இணைந்து இந்த நிகழ்வில் கலந்துகொண்டிருந்தனர். தமிழ் நாட்டின் முதலமைச்சர் மு.க.ஸ்டாலினால் அனுப்பிவைக்கப்பட்ட வாழ்த்துச்செய்தியும் அனைவர் முன்னிலையிலும் வாசிக்கப்பட்டது.

இந்த நிகழ்வைத்தொடர்ந்து பெடெக் நகரின் வரலாற்று அருங்காட்சியகத்திற்கு ஜி.யூ. போப் அவர்களின் உருவச்சிலை ஒன்று கையளிக்கும் நிகழ்வும் இடம்பெற்றது. இந்த நிகழ்வின்போது பலதரப்பட்ட மக்கள் கலந்துகொண்டனர். முல்லைத்தீவை சேர்ந்த பரமேஸ்வரன் ரசன்தன் என்பவரால் செதுக்கப்பட்ட சிலையே இங்கு காட்சிக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டிருந்தமை மேலும் சிறப்பம்சமாகும். இவர் யாழ்ப்பாண பல்கலைக்கழத்தில் சேர் பொன்னம்பலம் இராமநாதன் கலைப்பீடத்தின் தற்காலிக உதவி விரிவுரையாளராவர்.

வரலாற்றுச்சிறப்பு மிக்க இந்த இரண்டு நிகழ்வுகளைத்தொடர்ந்து இடம்பெற்ற மதிய போசன நிகழ்வில் திருக்குறள் தமிழ் மற்றும் ஆங்கில மொழிகளில் வாசிக்கப்பட்டு விளக்கம் அளிக்கப்பட்டதோடு, பண்பாட்டு நடனமும், பாடல் நிகழ்வுகளும் இடம்பெற்றிருந்தன. இந்த நிகழ்வின்போது போப் குடும்பத்தினர் கெளரவிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தமை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

இந்நிகழ்வில் கலந்துகொண்ட அனைவரிற்கும் கனடிய தமிழ் பேரவை மனமார்ந்த நன்றிகளையும் தெரிவித்துக்கிழக்கின்றது.

 

G.U. Pope Monument Opening

 

The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) is thrilled to announce the resounding success of the G.U. Pope Monument opening ceremony in Bedeque, Prince Edward Island. On July 15, 2023, esteemed guests and community members united to pay homage to G.U. Pope and honor his birthplace.

Under the visionary leadership of Sivan Ilangko, Chair of the GU Pope Monument in Canada Project Committee, the event unfolded as a mesmerizing celebration of cultural heritage and intellectual legacy.

The atmosphere was filled with pride as Anushka Sabesan’s captivating rendition of the Canadian National Anthem stirred hearts, while Tameera Shankar’s soulful performance of the Tamil Thai Vazthu evoked a deep sense of cultural identity. With bated breath, the crowd witnessed the grand unveiling of the G.U. Pope Monumental, an awe-inspiring symbol of the enduring impact of G.U. Pope’s contributions. Raveena Rajasingham, President of the Canadian Tamil Congress, delivered a speech, emphasizing the significance of preserving the rich tapestry of our cultural heritage.

The event was graced by esteemed speakers, including Malcolm Burrows, a member of the Pope family, who shared touching anecdotes and personal reflections. Dr. Doug Sobey, representing the Bedeque Area Historical Society, provided valuable historical insights, while Jamie Fox, MLA Borden-Kinkora, Ron Reynor, former Bedeque Mayor, and Philip Brown, Mayor of Charlottetown, commended the monumental occasion as a proud moment for the community.

Hon. Barb Ramsay, Provincial Minister of Social Development and Seniors, Government of PEI, delivered a thought-provoking speech, expressing her appreciation for the monument’s cultural and historical significance. Despite Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin’s absence, the heartfelt message from the Chief Minister, read aloud during the ceremony, highlighted the global recognition of G.U. Pope’s remarkable accomplishments.

The CTC bestowed a priceless gift upon the Bedeque Historical Museum – a meticulously crafted statue of G.U. Pope by the talented young artist Parameswaran Rasanthan from Mullaitivu, Temporary Assistant Lecturer at Sir. Ponnampalam Ramanathan faculty of performing and visual arts, University of Jaffna. This enduring symbol will forever honor G.U. Pope’s legacy.

The ceremony concluded with a lavish cultural feast, accompanied by cultural dance performance and a bilingual Thirukkuran presentation in Tamil and English. G.U. Pope’s esteemed family members were honored, embodying the profound connection between the scholar and his descendants.
