Canadian Tamil Congress hosts 10th Year Mullivaikal Remembrance in the Canadian Parliament

The Canadian Tamil Congress hosted a multi faith event on May 15th, 2019 in the Canadian Parliament to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the loss of tens of thousands of lives in Mullivaikkal. Over one hundred people, including Members of Parliament participated at this event.

Raveena Raveendran emceed the event which started at 5 pm with the National Anthem and Thamil Thai Vazthu performed by Jessica Judes. This was followed by a moment of silence to pay tribute to the lives lost in Mullivaikkal 10 years ago in Sri Lanka.

Hindu Priest from Ottawa Sivan temple Vishvanathan Thadsanamoorthy and Catholic Priest Rev. Judenixon from Montreal’s Tamil parish conducted prayers for the peace of departed souls.

Following the prayers, everyone who attended the event placed flowers to pay respect to those who lost their lives.

Canadian Tamil Congress President, Sivan Ilangko spoke about the objective of the event, the lack of justice and accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity after the end of the war, the expectations from Tamil community for stronger actions by the Canadian Government and UN in the path of finding truth and justice to the victims.

Minister Mary Ng who sponsored the venue for the event addressed the audience, followed by Conservative Party MP Arnold Viersen, New Democratic Party House Leader and MP Peter Julian on behalf of the respective political parties.

More than 20 Member’s of Parliament were in attendance at the 10th year Mullivaikal remembrance in the Parliament Hill including Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Kamal Khera, Parliamentary Secretary for International Trade Omar Alghabra, Parliamentary Secretary for Heritage Gary Anandasanagaree, Conservative critic for International Trade Diversification Dean Allison and former NDP Parliamentary Leader Guy Caron.
