Canadian Tamil Congress Hosts Successful Pickering Thai Pongal & Tamil Heritage Month Celebration

The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) proudly hosted its Thai Pongal and Tamil Heritage Month celebration on January 18, 2026, in Pickering, with the support of the City of Pickering. The event was a vibrant and memorable gathering for the Tamil community, filled with festive energy, cultural performances, and delicious traditional Tamil cuisine.

The celebration was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe and Deputy Fire Chief Nigel Robinson. Councillors from Pickering, Ajax, and Whitby also attended, along with executive members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Pickering. Although MP Jaunita Nathan could not attend in person, her representative delivered a speech on her behalf. The event was further enriched by guests from various community organizations who joined to support and participate in the celebration.

In his keynote address, Kumar Ratnam, President of CTC, highlighted that Tamil Heritage Month is not only a time to celebrate art, music, dance, and cuisine but also an opportunity to recognize the community members who have preserved Tamil language, values, and identity across oceans, borders, and generations. He further emphasized that the CTC believes preserving culture goes hand in hand with building strong and inclusive communities.

Raveena Rajasingam, Past President of CTC, also addressed the attendees, expressing her heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the event’s success. She noted that Tamil Heritage Month is also to learn about the struggles, triumphs, and contributions of Tamils throughout history, both in their homeland and across the global diaspora. She emphasized that, together, the community honors the legacy of the Tamil language, arts, festivals, and the enduring spirit of its people.

The CTC extends its sincere thanks to the City of Pickering and staff, teachers, participants, volunteers, and community members whose support made this celebration possible. Your involvement truly reflected the richness, resilience, and creativity of the Tamil community.
